Too Many Threads, Not Enough Pull

The episode opens with a striking image: Danny goes home to rest and a body rises out of his own well. From there, the episode keeps adding turns. Douglas is beaten to death in prison, then appears alive in the morgue. A guard is executed. Lara's restaurant is locked up. Finally comes the reveal that Anna herself is suspected of being the mole. That last turn is the most interesting, because it reframes the pilot's iron ingot as possibly planted. The problem is that almost nothing is explored before the next development arrives. The internal investigation into the death from "Lockdown" disappears. The cartel lawyer in the well is dropped. Douglas's faked death is never explained. Several characters repeat a version of "there's a traitor among us" without adding information. As a bridge to the finale, it does its job. As an episode on its own, it is mostly setup delivered through dialogue.

A Crowded but Effective Setup for the Finale

“Shattered Alliances” is a dense transitional episode that moves almost every major piece into position for the season finale. Danny faces an Internal Affairs investigation following the death of the attacker in the previous episode, only to become involved in another apparent conspiracy when a body is discovered inside the well at his own cabin. The victim’s connection to the drug organization from “Lockdown” also maintains strong continuity between the two episodes. The episode’s most effective surprise is Douglas Reid appearing alive in the morgue after Danny has already been told that he died in custody. The reveal does more than simply bring a character back; it forces Danny to question which information around him can still be trusted. Douglas warning that the cartel is only the beginning and that someone close to Danny is preparing to betray him starts bringing the season’s separate criminal threads under the same larger conspiracy. The episode’s primary weakness is also its density. Danny’s IA investigation, the body in the well, Douglas’s supposed death, the murdered guard, Lara’s disappearance and Anna becoming the primary mole suspect all occur within a relatively short period. Individually, most of these developments work, but placed so closely together they sometimes reduce each other’s impact. Even so, the discovery of unexplained payments entering Anna’s bank accounts provides strong setup for the finale. “Shattered Alliances” is not always perfectly balanced as an individual episode, but it prepares the season’s conclusion effectively.

The Circle Tightens Around Danny Taylor

Following the chaotic fallout of Episode 5, where Danny Taylor found himself cornered after that brutal push through the lab window, Episode 6 picks up the pieces in the most paranoid way possible. The pacing shifts from outward physical action to pure psychological dread. Internal Affairs is already circling, and before Danny can even clear his name regarding the lab incident, a fresh nightmare greets him at his secluded cabin. Finding a lifeless body stashed right inside the water well on his own property completely changes the game. This was no careless dumping. As the ballistics and coroner reports establish, the victim was a high profile attorney tied directly to the cartel they previously raided. Planting the body at Danny’s sanctuary proves that whoever is orchestrating this nightmare understands his routine intimately. The enemy is not just an outside syndicate anymore. The threat has established roots deep within the department. The standout moment of the episode arrives when Danny visits the morgue expecting to see Douglas, only to walk into a chilling trap. Douglas is not dead on the slab. The entire prison shower murder was staged, and Douglas stands before him alive, dropping ominous warnings about a much larger conspiracy pulling the strings. The tension here crackles because it shatters Danny’s few remaining certainties. Just as Danny begins questioning every ally around him, an even heavier blow lands. The whispers point directly to Anna Joy. Unexplained shell company wire transfers matching her access to the evidence locker seem specifically designed to frame her as the departmental mole. Watching Danny grapple with disbelief while the administrative walls close in makes this one of the strongest, most atmospheric chapters of the season. It sets the board for an unavoidable collision, leaving us on edge as trust evaporates completely.
