What the Sea Gives Back

The season opens at Ruyter's funeral, where his sister asks the question the whole department is avoiding: how does a man die in police custody? Whitmore's careful non-answers set the tone for an episode about institutions closing ranks. The investigation of Ruyter's death is taken over by Internal Affairs, the digital lab is sealed, and Miles discovers that the holding-cell footage wasn't erased but overwritten with an empty corridor, prepared in advance. The only lead is a door log showing a temporary visitor card in a corridor no visitor should enter. Meanwhile, the sea starts returning bodies. The first, found at North Quay, introduces forensic examiner Nora Keane, and she's an immediate asset: precise, unflappable, and careful never to say more than the evidence supports. Her catalogue of findings — sand that doesn't belong to the beach, clinical-grade fibers, and two layers of adhesive at the wrist — turns a drowning into a disposal, and her promise to keep her own copy of the report is a quietly loaded moment. The final scene reveals that Hüseyin survived and has been held by the ISA, with a familiar voice welcoming him back from behind one-way glass. It's a strong hook, though like much of the episode it is setup rather than payoff.

The Aftermath Refuses to Stay Buried

“Debris” understands that the most interesting way to begin Season 5 is not by immediately revealing what happened after the explosion, but by showing the damage left behind. Malcolm Ruyter is being buried, his family is openly questioning how he could die while in police custody, and another unidentified body has already washed up on the coast. The season begins with consequences rather than recovery. The investigation into Ruyter’s death is particularly effective because the evidence does not point toward a dramatic external breach. Instead, Danny and Miles discover manipulated surveillance footage, an unexplained temporary access card and Internal Affairs already exerting control over the evidence. That makes the mystery feel institutional without prematurely accusing the institution itself. The North Quay body also gives the premiere a second mystery that initially appears separate. Nora Keane’s examination suggests that the body was transported and deliberately introduced into the water rather than simply dying there. The episode therefore begins building a pattern before Danny understands that there is one. Its biggest weakness is density. The coastal body, Ruyter investigation, Internal Affairs intervention and the explanation of Hüseyin’s disappearance all compete for attention. But the final reveal that Hüseyin survived and has been taken into an ISA-controlled facility gives the premiere a strong closing image, especially when the unseen Bora welcomes him back.
